Josh Talks Comics
Two fairly recent titles that are both really strong and definitely 2 of my favourite series’ at the moment.
The Phantom Stranger #4
Firstly the cover is beautiful. It summarises the content nicely with humour thrown in there too.
I absolutely love the Stranger’s, or Philip Stark depending on how you see it, banter with his wife. They show a real connection and understanding with each other that is almost sadly contrasted with the obvious fact that she doesn’t know who he really is. Elena finding out would be something I’d love-to-hate to see in future issues.
Then there’s the encounter with Justice League Dark. Having never read any of it as of yet, I have 3 main points of interest:
1. Constantine’s British-ness is brilliantly subtle when he talks (thinking back to Godiva in JLI)
2. Does Black Orchid always perch in peculiar places? Not once in this issue is she standing up straight.
3. I do enjoy that Frankenstein is still featured in other comics despite his own series is ending with issue 16. I am curious as to whether he will remain as a member of the league though.
Josh rating: 8/10
Great story leading into a much anticipated arc for me. But Black Orchid is weird.
All-New X-men #5.
I think it’s safe to say that the series so far has really been dominated by Jean Grey. And who can blame Bendis for it? I think if she had to be brought back, this is definitely the best way to do it. And being a New-ish reader, I haven’t had nearly enough Jean in my life, despite some people probably being sick of having Jean live and die so often. But I think that’s a big part of the ‘Phoenix’ - cosmic entity or otherwise.
One final point; I know time travel is not an exact science… but surely if the original five X-men are aware of this happening in their future, they would endeavour to stop it when they return to their own time… so really this would never have happened in the first place would it?
Josh Rating: 9/10
Loved the re-cap of Jean’s life and times with the Marvel AR app. Not sure about Beast’s new look though.
Thanks for reading my thoughts, I’ll be back next week with another Spotlight. Adios!
So I’ve made a tumblr. Thanks for paying attention to it. I hope everyone who reads this enjoys it and don’t be afraid to leave comments, otherwise things get pretty one-sided. :P
I’m an 18 year old Brit and I’ve been an avid comic book reader since summer 2011 which is roughly when DC’s New 52 started (However, I’ve always loved superheroes). Despite the controversy of re-writing the whole multiverse, the re-boot gave me the perfect jumping on point as comics aren’t so big in the UK and sellers are few and far between. As well as leading me to buy books that are Pre-Flashpoint, I’ve read up on characters and events on the internet to satisfy this thirst to know everything.
Now that I’m well into the New 52 and Marvel Now!, at least once a week I’ll be posting a little something or other about the comic books I’ve been getting and featuring specifically my favourite one of that week.
So swing by each week if you’re interested in the opinions of someone who has a lot to talk about.
